At the end of each school year, Hatfield Elementary School in Massachusetts sent home a paper version of next year’s school supply list. But, as one can imagine, this piece of paper was easily lost or misplaced by parents. As a result, the school had an endless flow of calls and visits from parents who needed another copy of the list.
This process changed when Jen Chapin, principal of Hatfield Elementary School, opened an email from TeacherLists about a way to digitally manage, share and find school supply lists.
“Before TeacherLists, we had a constant flow of parents calling and coming in all summer long saying they didn’t get the school supply list,” said Chapin. “When we transitioned to TeacherLists, the calls and visits dramatically decreased. And when parents did call we directed them to the website and didn’t have to waste the paper.”
Simplifying Supply Lists
Teachers at the elementary school upload their supply list at the end of the year. Instead of an extra piece of paper being sent home, a sticker is placed on the report card to inform parents of the TeacherLists website and the students’ teacher the next year.
“The most important feature of TeacherLists is the convenience of it being available at any time to anyone,” Chapin said.
Supply lists won’t change much year-to-year, so teachers only have to review the list and make little updates if needed— saving valuable time and effort.
Every Teacher Needs Supplies
Many schools, including Hatfield Elementary, have educators and support staff who also need supplies but don’t necessarily have a permanent class, such as a school nurse or art teacher. In these instances, the staff can use Wish Lists, a feature that allows parents to see the supplies a school needs but are not required.
Chapin and Hatfield will continue to use TeacherLists to digitally share school supply lists every year so parents can easily access them anywhere and at anytime they need to.
